At Mabey’s, we define a “local” move as one that takes place within 60 miles of Albany, NY. For these moves, we charge an hourly rate, which varies by season and may be subject to a minimum number of hours. The cost of a local move includes the time to load and unload our truck as well as the time to drive between your former and new residences and our home base in Rensselaer, NY.

Intra-State Long-Distance Moving

New York is a large state — the distance from Buffalo to Manhattan alone is more than 380 miles. That allows for a lot of space for moves that are considered to be long distance. However, when you stay within New York State for your move, Mabey’s classifies that as “intra-state” and bases your quote on a combination of factors, including the estimated weight of your shipment and the total distance traveled.

Interstate Long-Distance Moving

If you are moving out of the state, that is what we call an “interstate” move, and there are some additional factors to consider. Like intra-state moves, Mabey’s bases the cost estimate on a combination of the weight of your belongings and the total distance those belongings must travel. Additionally, we must consider various other factors when providing estimates for interstate moves.

First, for efficiency, items for most interstate moves are combined with other shipments on large trucks. In these cases, Mabey’s local office works with Atlas Van Lines, Inc., to move your goods. In addition, while we will schedule the pickup and packing of your home, most interstate moves require a “spread” of dates for when you can expect delivery. This spread accounts for the unpredictability of long-distance interstate travel as well as unexpected factors that may affect the transport of other shipments on your truck.

Yes, Mabey’s can provide all boxes and packing materials. Additionally, our team can do all the packing and unpacking for you if you choose.

What happens if my closing gets delayed?

We will do our best to help you adjust to any unforeseen circumstances. We can offer many different solutions based on your specific needs, including holding on the truck in the short-term (1-3 days) or storing at our warehouse if you require additional time (3 days+) before delivery.

What do you do if it rains on move day?

We will cover your floors to minimize tracking water into your home. Your furniture will be covered by pads while moving in and out of the home to keep everything dry. Overstuffed furniture will be covered with shrink-wrap.

Can you shorten our delivery window?

We have to adhere to the standard delivery spread at the price we provided to you. However we can provide you pricing for expedited service if a specific delivery day is crucial to your relocation.

Do I have to pay for travel time on a local move?

Travel time is a billable charge and will be figured into the overall cost of your move.
